Papers of William Hodges Mann [manuscript], 1880-1908.

Two letterbooks and a scrapbook of Judge Mann contain legal and business correspondence from his law practice. Of interest is a fragment of a draft of a letter defending his views on the liquor issue. The scrap-book includes clippings about Mann's gubernatorial campaigns with emphasis on his temperance stand.

William Hodges Mann was born 30 July 1843 in Williamsburg, Virginia, to John Mann (d. 1843) and Mary Hunter Bowers Mann. He moved with his family to Rockbridge County, Virginia, in 1852, and attended Brownsburg Academy. In 1857, he moved to Petersburg, Virginia, where he apprenticed as a court clerk while studying law. Claude Augustus Swanson was born 31 March 1862 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He attended public schools and Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Swanson graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1885 and from the University of Virginia law school in 1886. Admitted to the bar in 1886, he commenced practicing in Pittsylvania County.
